Forget about straightening it. If it is brown then dye it a chocolate brown (or maybe auburn) You don't need dead straight hair. I would rather have long and slightly wavy hair to straight and short.

When you get a hair cut only get the ends trimmed to it gets rid of the split ends. It might take a while but eventually it will grow out.
